4 ways to make your business safer & more welcoming for LGBTQIA+ folks

Creating a safe and welcoming space should be a top priority. And no, just throwing a rainbow on your logo for Pride month does not make you an ally.

Here are a few ways to actually show up, if you want to be more inclusive in your business.

Company-Wide Training:

Providing training for your staff members on Diversity, Equity & Inclusion is a crucial step toward building a healthy workplace. This training should include proper pronoun usage, intersectionality, and non-discrimination policies. Consider DEI training for all members of leadership, managers, and staff.

Gender-Neutral Restrooms

Offering clearly marked gender-neutral restrooms is a simple and effective way to make your business inherently more safe & accessible to transgender and non-binary customers & clients.

Display Signage:

Flags & rainbow stickers indicate that your business supports the LGBTQIA community. Placing signs in visible areas is a clear way to express that your business is a safe & inclusive space for queer folk.

Use Inclusive Language:

Avoid using gendered language and opt for gender-neutral terms such as “folks” or "spouse." This language is more inclusive and welcoming to all customers, regardless of their gender identity or sexual orientation.

Seek Feedback:

Ask your clientele, customers, and staff how you can make them more comfortable & welcome in your business. Be open to growth & learning opportunities wherever they present themselves.

The importance of being an ally to the LGBTQIA+ community cannot be overstated. Discrimination, harassment, and violence against LGBTQIA+ individuals continue to persist in their personal lives and workplaces. Businesses have a responsibility to create a safe and inclusive environment that values diversity, attracts and retains diverse talent, and demonstrates a commitment to equality and social justice.
